Week 13 (The year of the upset)
Submitted by micah.groves on Mon, 2007-11-26 22:05.
If it wasn't already, this weekend hammered home the fact that this has indeed been the year of the upset. Yet another No. 1 team fell as teams positioned themselves for the final week of the regular season. The No. 1 LSU Tigers lost 50-48 at home in triple overtime to unranked Arkansas on Friday. I don't know if Less had his eye on the Michigan job or what, but it looks like LSU's second overtime loss of the year will keep them out of the national title picture. The new king of the Big 12, at least for now, appears to be the Missouri Tigers. They won the border battle with the No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks 36-28. Missouri seems to be everybody's new sensation, but quite frankly Kansas look pretty bad in that game, especially in the first half. Mangino's crew came out looking a little flat. Perhaps the national prime time stage got to them a little. Who knows? The Jayhawks finally got a comfortable and made a late run. But it was too little too late. I hated to see the Jayhawks' run end, but you have to give them credit for an amazing season, one of, if not the best in Kansas football history. Now one-loss missouri gets a chance at redmeption against the only team to beat them this season, my Oklahoma Sooners. Speaking of my Sooners, the running game looked good as they pounded rival Oklahoma State 49-17. It was clear from the beginning of the game that OU wanted to run the football. And they were going to do so until OSU proved they could stop them. Well, the Pokes couldn't stop them and OU ran and ran and ran some more. Allen Patrick had his best game of the year running for 202 yards and two touchdowns. I have to admit I was a lttle hard on Patrick after the Texas Tech game, so I apologize. Us Sooner fans tend to get a little frustrated. Anyway, with the win over OSU, my Sooners sured up a spot in the Big 12 title game this Saturday night in San Antonio. This will be Oklahoma's sixth appearance in the Big 12 Championship and Missouri's first. OU has won four Big 12 titles. If you have listened to the experts so far, they have all talked about how Missouri fell apart and handed OU the win in early October. Hopefully the Sooners will ignore all the pre-game talk and come out ready to play. Should Missouri win, it would pretty much guaruntee them a spot in the national title game. An OU win would mean a return trip to the Fiesta Bowl for the Sooners. Missouri's offense is good, their defense is not. OU should be able to move the football. I look for one of two things to happen. OU's defense will show up and OU will win big (48-13), or the game will be very high scoring and come down to whoever has the ball last. While I hope for a big win by OU, I am expecting a high-scoring close game. As for my official prediction, 45-42 Boomer Sooner. Elsewhere, No. 3 West Virginia won big over No. 20 UConn, beating the Huskies 66-21. Now as long as the Mountaineers don't stumble this week against Pitt, it looks like they will have a place in the BCS title game. But the way things have gone this year, that part about not stumbling may be big. Virginia Tech won a big game against Virginia assuring them of an ACC championship game with Boston College who got a rare win over the University of Miami. USC also won big over Arizona State, beating the Sun Devils 44-24. I've heard a few rumblings around the country saying USC is the nations best team and deserves a spot in the national title game. GIVE ME A BREAK! The Trojans have losses against Oregon and Pac-10 cellar dweller Stanford. I can admit the fact that my Sooners don't deserve to play in the national title game. So why can't all the Pac-10 lovers admit that noone from that conference deserves to play for it? The overrated Pac-10 is finally showing how good it isn't. The SEC champioship game will be between LSU and Tennessee. The Volunteers barely squeezed into the game after a four-overtime, 52-50 win over the Wildcats of Kentucky. Should LSU slip up and lose to Tennessee, I would not be shocked to see Less Miles skip the Tigers' bowl game and run for Ann Arbor. Hawaii remained the nation's only undefeated team, beating Boise State 39-27. I hope the Warriors get some respect and get a chance to play in a BCS game. Just hope it isn't against my Sooners. We don't need any repeats of last year's Fiesta Bowl. The coaching carousel also seems to have begun. Following a win over rival Texas, Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione stepped down as the Aggies caoch. A&M then announced today that former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman will replace him next year. Nebraska is also looking for a head coach, following the firing of Bill Callahan. Other open coaching positions include Michigan, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Georgia Tech, Duke and now it looks like Arkansas despite their big win over No. 1 LSU. Here is a line-up of this week's championship games: Big 12: Missouri vs. Oklahoma SEC: LSU vs. Tennessee ACC: Boston College vs. Virginia Tech Conference USA: Tulsa vs. Central Florida MAC: Miami (OH) vs. Central Michigan Next week I will hopefully take a look at some of the major bowl games. But until then, enjoy the champioship games. |
