Rose and Sugar Bowls

Alright, today I will take a look at two more major bowl games. I will start with the Rose Bowl between Southern Cal and Illinois, followed by the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Hawaii.

While Illinois comes from the Big Ten conference, they are not your typical pound-it-out, traditional Big Ten offense. QB Juice Williams could present some problems for the USC defense. Williams will lead Illinois' spread offense, the same type of offense that Oregon ran when they handed USC a 24-17 loss earlier in the season. In addition to the problems Williams presents, USC will also have to deal with the Big Ten's second-leading rusher, Rashard Mendenhall.

So what will be different for USC when it faces the spread offense this time? The trojans are finally healthy. USC has one of the top linebacking corps in college football. And according to ESPN.com, they are all healthy for the first time this season. So the USC defense should be up to the task.

As far as USC's offense goes, it's all about the running game. The trojans haven't had a stand out wide receiver this season, so I expect them to ride the legs of freshman runningback Joe Mcknight.

I think the Illini will wear out as the game goes along, and USC's depth and experience will be the determining factor. While I wouldn't be shocked if Illinois won, I expect USC to roll.

27-14 Trojans.

Now for the Sugar Bowl.

This has been the year of the upset, and I wouldn't be surprised to see one here. Hawaii's high powered passing game, lead by quarterback Colt Brennan could have a big game against a Georgia secondary that is struggling. I think the key for Hawaii will be staying on offense for as long as possible. And to be honest, that is a hard thing to do with an offense like the one they run.

Georgia has the potential to dominate the line of scrimmage in this game. If that happens, I look for Bulldog runningback Knowshon Moreno to have a huge game. This will probably be the most physical team Hawaii has faced all year. The key to the game, in my opinion, will be whether Georgia's defense can stop the Hawaii passing attack. If they don't, it may not matter how many points their offense puts up.

I have a strange feeling that this game might be a shootout. And if that happens, I'm afraid it might be bad news for the Georgia Bulldogs. So after already having picked an upset in the Orange Bowl, this is officially my second upset pick. Hey, it's been a crazy season. Do you really expect the bowl games to be less crazy?
